Error 0xc00d36c4: what it actually means

Windows says it can't play the file. Sometimes it's just the wrong player, sometimes it isn't.

One minute to find out which side you're on

Download VLC, which is free, and open that file with it. It's the test that separates the two possible cases: if VLC plays it, the video is perfectly fine and the problem was only the Windows player, which natively handles very few formats. You're done, and it cost you nothing.

If VLC refuses too, then the file really is damaged, and the error code was telling you the truth.

Why that code shows up for two opposite reasons

0xc00d36c4 means one thing: "I can't decode this file". But there are two reasons for it, and they're worlds apart. The first is that the player doesn't know the format — common with action cam and camera files, which use encodings the stock Windows player doesn't handle. The file is perfect, what's missing is the piece that reads it.

The second is that the file was written badly: interrupted recording, a copy from the card that stopped halfway, a download gone wrong. There the player is right, and no update will make it play.

What not to do, under any circumstances

  • Don't install codec packs from random sites: VLC does the same job without putting anything into your system.
  • Don't convert the file before knowing which of the two cases is yours: if it's damaged, conversion fails and can overwrite the original.
  • Don't delete the file from the card after copying it to the computer, until you've watched it play all the way through.
  • Don't reach for the first paid program promising to repair everything: first work out what broke.

If VLC won't open it either

Then the fault is in the file's structure, and the free check above tells you in two seconds which one: missing index, truncated file, lost header. Three different faults with three different remedies, and knowing which one you have is half the work.

In the most common case — the missing index — the images are all still inside the file, and they go back into a working container without anything being re-encoded.

Questions I get every time

I updated Windows and the codecs, but the error is still there.

Then you're in the second case: the file is damaged. No update can read something that was never written correctly. The next step is working out what's missing inside it.

The same file opens on my phone but not on my PC.

That's the classic sign of the first case: the phone has the right codecs, the Windows player doesn't. The file is healthy. If you just need to watch it, VLC solves it; if you need to edit it, it's worth converting properly.

The video plays but always freezes at the same point.

The file is readable up to there and then there's a damaged block. It can often be recovered by skipping the unreadable part: a few frames are lost at that point and the rest comes back.
